From Idea to Impact: Meet the Two Ingenious Australians Changing the World

When it comes to turning ideas into action, two young Australians are showing the world that brilliance, creativity, and determination know no bounds. Maximillian O’Brien from RMIT University and Hannah Gough from Swinburne University of Technology have just been named international Top 20 finalists in the prestigious 20th James Dyson Award, a global competition that celebrates student inventors tackling real-world challenges. Their inventions, Flow and SyriSter, are already making waves – and inspiring the next generation of innovators.

For Maximillian, the spark for Flow came from something many of us see every day but rarely think about: a discarded mattress. In Australia alone, 1.8 million mattresses are thrown away each year, most of them ending up in landfill. “I noticed mattresses everywhere on the roadside,” Max recalls, “and it made me wonder, what if we could design a mattress made to come apart, be repaired, and fully recovered?”

His answer is Flow, a revolutionary mattress system designed for a circular life. Flow disassembles in under 30 seconds, uses no landfill-bound materials, and delivers the same comfort and support as traditional mattresses. After months of research with recyclers, material scientists, and members of the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council, Max has created a solution that’s both environmentally responsible and user-friendly, setting a new standard for sustainable sleep.

Hannah’s inspiration comes from a desire to save lives. Unsafe syringe reuse remains a critical global health issue, contributing to millions of infections each year from hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV. From her research, she discovered that many communities in crisis zones lack the means to sterilise medical equipment safely.

Her invention, SyriSter, is a portable UV-C syringe steriliser that eradicates pathogens in just 60 seconds. Lightweight and powered by rechargeable batteries, SyriSter provides a cost-efficient, portable solution for low-resource areas, helping prevent life-threatening disease transmission. “I wanted to design something that could make a tangible difference in people’s lives, particularly in medicine and humanitarian contexts,” Hannah explains. Her year-long project of interviews, prototyping, and testing has resulted in a device with the potential to save countless lives around the world.

Achieving a Top 20 finalist spot in the James Dyson Award is no small feat. Sir James Dyson himself will evaluate both Flow and SyriSter, and he will announce the global winners on 5th November. Each team will receive almost $60,000 AUD to further develop and commercialise their inventions, turning visionary ideas into tangible impact.

The James Dyson Award, now in its 20th year, has become a global platform for young designers and engineers to showcase innovations that address some of the world’s biggest problems. From eco-conscious solutions to life-saving medical devices, the award highlights the ingenuity and social responsibility of the next generation of problem solvers. Sustainability summons certain images to mind. And, when it comes to big businesses like Amazon doing their bit to go green, it’s easy to picture paper straws, keep cups, and cute compostable mailers. (Or. If you’re a regular Women Love Tech reader, water conservation). But, for Jasmine Hyman, Global Lead of Amazon Right Now Climate Fund, the vision stretches far beyond warehouses or delivery vans. “The Right Now Climate Fund reflects our commitment to supporting nature, people, and communities where action is needed most urgently,” she explains. “What makes this $100M fund distinctive is its focus on concrete environmental benefits that are scalable, durable, and valued by the communities where we operate.”

Since its creation in 2019, the fund has backed initiatives that harness nature’s regenerative power – from restoring degraded forests to safeguarding critical watersheds – while elevating human wellbeing. “It’s not about headlines. It’s about financing thoughtfully designed projects that demonstrate new possibilities and catalyse broader change through our partners’ expertise,” Jasmine says.

From Bandicoots to Breakthroughs

Australia is home to some of the world’s most extraordinary creatures. And, sadly, one of the highest extinction rates anywhere on Earth. Climate change, habitat loss, and natural disasters are pushing many native species to the brink. Fortunately, a new AU$2.5 million investment by Amzaon to protect some of Australia’s most endangered wildlife, is helping to change that.

Working with the Odonata Foundation, the Amazon Right Now Climate Fund supports breeding programs, wildlife sanctuaries, and species relocation. The foundation’s ‘500-in-5’ model is elegantly simple: maintain at least 500 animals of a species across five sites to build genetic resilience and shield against local disasters. “What excites me most about Odonata’s 500-in-5 model is that it fundamentally reimagines conservation work,” Jasmine says. “The results speak for themselves. Take the eastern barred bandicoot, once officially declared extinct in the wild. In 2004, there were just 24 bandicoots at Mt. Rothwell. Today, there are more than 4,000 in sanctuaries and over 1,500 in the wild.”

The project transcends statistics. “During a recent spotlight tour, watching guests become visibly moved by seeing these animals in the evening light showed me this work transcends numbers – it inspires others to join the movement,” she explains. Each species is more than a number. “A single bandicoot turns over three tonnes of soil annually, making landscapes more resilient to floods and droughts. Supporting these nine species creates contagious momentum for the positive change our planet desperately needs.”

Mangroves in Mumbai: Flamingos, and Female Empowerment

Across the globe, in the bustling metropolis of Mumbai, the fund supports a $1.2 million project to restore mangrove forests and remove plastic from Thane Creek. Once one of the world’s most polluted waterways, Thane Creek is a vital stopover for migratory birds, including flamingos. “The Mumbai mangrove project perfectly illustrates the essential connection between environmental and social impact,” Jasmine says. “This intervention doesn’t just benefit wildlife – it transforms daily life for nearby residents who previously lived alongside this constant pollution.”

The project extends to flamingo nesting grounds 620 kilometres north, where local women are employed to plant mangroves that form natural bioshields against climate events. Backed by research from Srusthi Conservation Group, these efforts are guided by data and supported by government engagement, creating pathways for lasting, systemic change. “By joining forces with Hasten Regeneration on this landmark project, we aim to safeguard Mumbai’s flamingo habitat for future generations,” Jasmine adds.

Seaweed, Science and Scale

Meanwhile, in the North Sea, Amazon has funded the world’s first commercial-scale seaweed farm nestled between offshore wind turbines in the Netherlands. Seaweed’s potential spans carbon capture, marine biodiversity restoration, and sustainable raw materials for food, fashion, and personal care. “At the North Sea Farmer’s Seaweed Conference last year, I was amazed by the diversity of applications – from seaweed-based socks and flour to patio furniture, plastic packaging alternatives, and personal care products,” Jasmine says. “This versatility points to seaweed’s potential as a scalable climate solution. Unlike traditional agriculture, which competes for land and requires fertilisers that damage waterways, seaweed farming needs no land, no fertiliser, no freshwater, and is likely to actually improve the marine environment while growing.”

Amazon’s investment also includes a research component to measure biodiversity and carbon capture. “When results arrive next year, they’ll provide the scientific foundation for scaling this solution worldwide – turning underutilised ocean space into productive climate action,” Jasmine notes.

Collaboration is the Key

Ultimately, these projects together reveal the power of combining expertise, collaboration, and scale. “The common thread across Australia’s species recovery, Mumbai’s ecosystem restoration, and the North Sea’s seaweed cultivation is their potential to drive system-wide transformation. Each generates valuable research that benefits the broader conservation community while demonstrating scalable approaches to complex environmental challenges,” Jasmine says. Companies like Amazon provide resources and reach, while local and scientific partners contribute deep knowledge and trusted relationships.

Jasmine’s work proves that climate action can be elegant, measurable, and inspiring. “While people see Amazon’s sustainability efforts in packaging or renewable energy, these projects reveal another dimension – creating the conditions for transformative solutions to emerge and scale. We’re not just reducing our own footprint – we’re helping build the infrastructure for systemic environmental change that extends far beyond any single company’s reach.”

Through protecting endangered wildlife, restoring mangroves, and pioneering sustainable seaweed cultivation, Amazon and Jasmine Hyman demonstrate that corporate action can leave a lasting mark on both nature and communities. In doing so, they show that climate solutions can be as creative, ambitious, and interconnected as the planet itself.

This year’s PAX Aus once again proved why it’s one of the most beloved events on the Australian gaming calendar. Held over three packed days, it’s a celebration of gaming and gaming culture filled with thought-provoking panels, a buzzing expo hall, incredible tournaments, and a community that truly feels like family.

With over 85,000 attendees flooding the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre for the 2025 weekend, the atmosphere was electric. But for me, the real magic happened in the Indie Game Showcase where creativity, heart, and storytelling collide. Wandering through the rows of passionate developers showing off their work, I discovered a few absolute standouts that deserve to be on every gamer’s radar.

Silk Soar — From Darkness to Light

The first game that caught my eye was Silk Soar, a physics-flinging, rage-bringing narrative 2D platformer where you take on life as a newborn caterpillar, climbing from the rainforest floor to the top of the canopy.

Created by an Adelaide-based team, Silk Soar isn’t just a platformer, it’s a story about persistence and healing. One of the developers told me the concept was inspired by themes of PTSD, transformation, and finding light after darkness. The narrative unfolds like a poem…literally. The lore is told through verse, and it’s beautiful.

Their booth at PAX was crowdfunded, which makes their presence even more inspiring. The game is set to release mid-next year, but there’s already a demo available — and trust me, it’s worth checking out.

When I played, I was immediately struck by:

  • The sweet, painterly animation and gentle art style
  • How intuitive and easy it was to pick up
  • The smart “trajectory preview” that lets you plan your flings strategically
  • The deeply personal story which has a metaphorical journey from darkness into light
  • And, of course, that poetic narration that ties it all together

Silk Soar manages to be both peaceful and punishing, a delicate balance that keeps you coming back for “just one more try.”


Bits & Bops — Joy in Every Beat

Next up: Bits & Bops, a delightful rhythm game bursting with personality.

This is a collection of 20 original rhythm mini-games, each filled with catchy music, hand-drawn animation, and gameplay that’s easy for anyone to pick up. It’s got that same instant charm as Rhythm Heaven or WarioWare, but with its own unique flavour.

The Australian team behind Bits & Bops has already been racking up awards, from the SXSW Sydney Games Festival (2023 and 2024) to several other festival selections and it’s easy to see why. The controls are snappy, the tunes are infectiously catchy, and the art style radiates joy.

Built on a custom game engine designed for lightning-fast responsiveness, every tap feels perfectly in sync. Whether you’re a rhythm game veteran or just someone who loves a good beat, Bits & Bops is the kind of game that makes you smile from the first note to the last.

Bones: Wandering Soul — A Haunting Journey of Belonging

The last game I want to highlight is Bones: Wandering Soul, a 2.5D narrative-driven adventure/puzzle game about a small skeleton on a journey of self-discovery.

You play as Bones, a misfit separated from his coffin, wandering a strange city filled with secrets, ghosts, and memories. To find his way home, he must help both the living and the dead, carrying messages, solving puzzles, and uncovering clues about his lost identity.

The game blends the quirky charm of Harold Halibut with the eerie atmosphere of Little Nightmares, set against a backdrop inspired by 90s and postmodern architecture. The result is a hauntingly beautiful world…one that feels nostalgic and unsettling all at once.

I was especially intrigued by the story behind its creation. The project grew out of a Screen Australia Emerging Game Makers Fund, initially testing a concept around detachable limbs (yes, really). It was developed by a team of RMIT Masters students, including an animator who moved from Perth to Melbourne — a move that inspired the game’s emotional core.

Bones’ story reflects that sense of alienation and belonging — the feeling that home can be both familiar and strange, and that sometimes the journey to find it is what truly defines us.

There are 18–20 supporting characters, each with their own story arcs, and the game will unfold over five to seven episodes. Despite being a work in progress, the build I saw already had stunning animation and I loved that they left the animatics visible in some scenes. Seeing those unfinished sketches offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at how much artistry and care goes into every frame.

PAX Aus: The Beating Heart of Aussie Game Dev

PAX Aus always showcases the best of gaming culture, but what makes the Indie Showcase so special is the sheer passion behind every booth. Each of these games — Silk Soar, Bits & Bops, and Bones: Wandering Soul represents something uniquely Australian: creativity, storytelling, and heart.

From caterpillars climbing toward the light, to rhythm games that make you grin, to skeletons finding their way home, these indie gems remind us that games aren’t just about mechanics or graphics. They’re about connection, emotion, and artistry.

I walked away from PAX Aus 2025 inspired and more certain than ever that the future of Australian game development is brighter (and weirder, and more wonderful) than ever.

When Amy Bradshaw, General Manager of Global Business Solutions for TikTok Australia, began her career, she wasn’t thinking about algorithms or analytics.

“I didn’t start in tech,” she laughs. “I started in media, working for agencies like Gary Vayner at VaynerMedia. Gary always focused on driving business outcomes, not just winning awards — and that mindset completely shaped how I approach technology today.”

Her transition from agency life to tech was organic. “We were early adopters of TikTok as a client, and I could see how the platform drove meaningful results. At first, people thought it was just a space for dancing videos but we showed that it could deliver real, measurable business impact.”

“When we started, TikTok was seen as the entertainment platform for Gen Z,” says Amy. “Now, our fastest-growing segment is over 45. Financial services, major banks, and legacy brands are all using the platform. In five years, we’ve grown to more than 500 staff in Australia and become truly multi-generational.”

Amy attributes this to TikTok’s startup spirit. “We have a motto — It’s Always Day One. It means staying hungry, innovative, and open-minded, no matter how big we get. We hire for grit and ambition, not just years of experience. We want people who think about what’s next.”

TikTok has become a playground for brands to express their personality. “I love seeing brands come alive here,” says Amy. “HiSmile, for example, is an Australian brand taking on legacy giants in oral care — they’re bold, relatable and smart about engaging with the TikTok audience.”

Luxury brands are also finding new audiences. “We’ve seen high-end houses collaborate with niche creators — even one famous for train videos! It worked because it felt authentic. That’s the magic of the platform — connecting micro-communities through shared creativity.”

The Future of Brand Storytelling

“Episodic content is huge,” Amy says. “Short, 30–60 second series that keep people coming back. It’s entertainment-driven storytelling that builds real connection.”

But she’s quick to note that structure still matters. “You don’t need to abandon your brand identity. Use your colours, sonic branding, and logos — just do it in a way that feels native. It’s about showing you understand the community rather than forcing a message.”

Women Leading in Tech

Amy’s career reflects the evolving definition of women in technology. It’s clear from Amy you don’t have to code to make a difference in tech. What matters is curiosity, creativity, and understanding how technology impacts people’s lives. That’s where the innovation really happens.

Her journey — from New York’s agency world to leading one of the most dynamic tech companies in Australia — is a reminder that tech leadership is about mindset, not job titles.

Who knew the future of finance would come in mini form? Young Aussie entrepreneurs are quietly taking over everything from SMEs to saving – and frankly, they’re doing it better than most adults. They’re nailing chores, side hustles, budgeting like a (much older) boss, all while running a $623 million economy of their own. The newly released Spriggy Economy Report 2025 from Spriggy, Australia’s leading financial education platform for kids and families, shows these pint-sized earners collectively made $286.3 million this year – an 11% jump from last year and more than three times the rate of national wage growth. While adults wrestle with bills and the cost-of-living crunch, the nation’s youngest money-makers are quietly thriving.

And the real plot twist is that girls are out-earning boys – $1.03 to the dollar – flipping the script on Australia’s adult gender pay gap, where women still earn just $0.88. It’s a complete reversal of what we see in the workforce and raises a big question for parents: if girls start out ahead, why do they fall behind later, and how can we help them keep that confidence as they grow?

Spriggy’s report, based on insights from more than 790,000 young Australians, shows a generation that’s not only financially savvy but generous too. Together, kids donated and fundraised over $1.06 million in the past year – up 28% year-on-year. Their savings goals range from family holidays (Japan was the top destination) to viral collectibles like Labubu plush toys, which spiked an astonishing 9,600 per cent as a savings target. Forget smashed avo – today’s kids are saving for plushies and purpose.

Spriggy Head of Finance, Jasmin Dayes, says the results show just how engaged kids have become with money. “These results show kids are far more engaged with money than many people realise. They’re not only working hard and saving ambitiously, from family holidays to viral trends, but also showing wonderful generosity. This is a generation that is both financially aware and socially conscious, which is something worth celebrating.”

So what’s behind the shift – and how do we make sure girls keep their early financial edge? According to Ladies Finance Club founder and Spriggy spokesperson Molly Benjamin, it’s all about building confidence early and keeping the conversation going as kids grow up. “When children see the tangible results of their effort – whether it’s earning from chores, saving for a big goal, or donating to causes – it builds lifelong confidence and independence,” she says. “The fact that girls are out-earning boys is especially encouraging, and shows the next generation is writing their own story around money.”

But as Molly points out, this confidence can fade fast once kids hit their teens. Studies show girls’ financial confidence often dips during adolescence, just as boys’ starts to soar. “Parents play such an important role here,” she says. “Teaching kids about budgeting and saving isn’t just about numbers – it’s about independence, confidence, and helping them believe they can take control of their financial future.”

Her favourite teaching trick is the “three piggy banks” method – one for spending, one for saving, and one for giving. “It’s simple, but powerful,” Molly explains. “It helps kids develop patience, make choices, and experience generosity. They learn that money isn’t just something to spend – it’s something to manage, plan, and use for good.”

And with cost-of-living pressures at an all-time high, these lessons have never been more important. Money stress doesn’t just affect adults – kids absorb it too. But Spriggy’s findings show that children are rising to the challenge, using digital pocket money tools to budget, save, and give with surprising maturity. They’re learning early on that money confidence is the real superpower – and one that can last a lifetime.

The takeaway? Australia’s kids aren’t just earning pocket money – they’re reshaping how we think about money itself. And if parents can nurture that spark of confidence, especially for girls, we might just see the first generation to close the pay gap for good.

Because if 12-year-old girls can out-earn the boys on pocket money, imagine what they’ll do when they run the world, as actual adults?

Sexologist and sexuality educator Dr. Mindy DeSeta developed the Hily App Consent Guard to ensure intimacy happens only when both parties are into it. The feature uses machine learning to detect explicit messages or images before they land in your DMs. If something looks NSFW, the app pauses it – kind of like a bouncer at the door – and asks for one-click consent from both people. If one person says no (or doesn’t reply), that racy message stays out of sight.

It’s a bold move in an era where “you up?” messages still haunt the 2am hours. For Hily, it’s about reimagining consent for the digital age. “People have gotten too used to online behaviour that wouldn’t be tolerated in real life,” says Liubomyr Pivtorak, Chief Product Officer at Hily App. “If a stranger exposed themselves on the street, we’d be horrified. But in digital spaces, it’s somehow become normal. We wanted to change that.”

Imagine getting a notification that someone wants to get a little flirty – that’s mental foreplay. Consent isn’t a mood killer; it’s a confidence boost.”

Here’s how it works: say someone tries to send you a spicy message or photo. Before it ever reaches you, Hily’s algorithm quietly flags it. The app then prompts the sender to request your permission. You can say yes, no, or ignore it entirely. If you say no, the image disappears into the digital void. If you’re in the mood, you can give a one-click green light, and voilà – permission granted. You can even adjust your preferences depending on your vibe that day: whether you’re feeling hot, chill, or “not tonight, please.”

For longtime Hily app users, Consent Guard replaces the app’s older Explicit Filter feature, which blurred out potentially explicit photos. The new system goes one step further – preventing anything unwanted from appearing in the first place. It’s consent-first, not censor-first, and that distinction matters.

Why I think you should bring your teenagers to SXSW Sydney

Last year, I brought my 14-year-old son along to SXSW Sydney for the first time. I’d had a gig speaking on a panel, and pitched it as a bit of a ‘bring your kid to work day’ experience.

I was curious to see what might spark his interest, from space machines to complex robotics, to gaming comps and the unmissable tech and innovation expo, I knew he’d connect with something at the event.

What happened next blew me away.

By the end of the week, he had:

  • Sketched out a podcast idea & secured a gig as a teen tech writer

This story starts with a broken hand and a tube of mascara. Chapter two brings the plot twist. Newcastle local Storm Menzies, who has mild cerebral palsy, went to twist open her favourite beauty essential, and she suddenly realised just how inaccessible most makeup products really are. “I went to open a tube of mascara and thought, oh my gosh, how am I going to do this?” she recalls.

That simple moment — something millions of people do every morning without thinking — sparked an idea that’s now earning national recognition. Fast forward to a very happy ending, and today, Storm’s social enterprise, ByStorm Beauty, has been named a finalist in the 2025 Australian Disability Service Awards for Most Impactful Assistive Technology Solution. Her invention is a clever, 3D-printed grip that slides seamlessly onto everyday beauty products — from mascara to lipstick to nail polish — making them easier to open and hold. No glue. No redesign. And no fuss. Just smart, inclusive design that works with the products people already love.

“Beauty should adapt to you, not the other way around,” Storm says. And that belief sits at the heart of everything ByStorm does. Designed with and for the disability community, these universal grips restore independence to an everyday ritual that can be deeply personal. “It’s not just about appearance,” she explains. “It’s about confidence, control, and getting your routine back.”

Storm’s journey into inclusive beauty began not in a lab or office, but on her kitchen bench. She started experimenting with clay from her local $2 shop, teaching herself 3D modelling late into the night. “I just needed more surface area,” she says with a laugh. But, after more than 100 prototypes, that DIY curiosity turned into a polished, market-ready solution.

Within weeks of launching, ByStorm Beauty sold more than a thousand units. A major boost came when comedian and beauty advocate Celeste Barber bought the first batch of products and released her own colourways in a headline collaboration that put accessibility on the beauty industry’s radar.

Inclusive beauty by storm

The response was immediate. And emotional. People who’d long struggled with the fine motor challenges of traditional packaging were suddenly able to apply mascara or lipstick on their own for the first time in years. Some wrote to say they could get ready for job interviews or nights out without help. Others simply said they finally felt part of the beauty conversation again.

But Storm’s ambition goes beyond product design. She’s now working with major brands to reimagine what inclusive packaging can look like — and to help the beauty world catch up to the diversity of the people who use its products. “When brands don’t see people with disability using products, they assume we’re not a market,” she says. “The truth is, the products are just inaccessible.”

ByStorm’s approach offers a bridge — an immediate, third-party accessibility layer that allows brands to start including everyone now, while they work on more permanent redesigns. “I can hold the risk for brands,” Storm says. “My tools let them dip a toe into accessibility while they learn.”

Today, Storm has transformed quietly but powerfully, from launching her first prototype stall at the Hunter Disability Expo – where hundreds of people joined her waitlist – to engaging in conversations with global beauty companies about accessible packaging

“The goal isn’t to create a ‘special’ beauty aisle,” she says. “It’s about making accessibility the standard. I want everyone to use the same trending products — because beauty should never exclude anyone.”

As the beauty industry continues to evolve, Storm Menzies stands as proof that innovation doesn’t always come from the biggest labs or loudest brands. Sometimes, it starts with a small act of frustration — and a vision big enough to change the world.
