I may not be a mum, but as the self-proclaimed “cool aunty” to three boys under the age of seven, I’ve learned two things:

  1. Kids have an astonishing amount of energy.
  2. You can’t just rely on the local park every single weekend unless you want to slowly lose your mind.

So, when I heard about the Maggie app – a brand-new Aussie creation designed to help you find free, fun, family-friendly activities – I was all ears. And, it’s not just about keeping kids busy – it’s about connection. Eimear and Olivia surveyed over 200 parents and found that over half of Aussie parents with under-fives feel lonely, and many struggle to find ways to get out and meet others. Maggie gives you that nudge to get outside, explore your community, and maybe even make a new friend or two while the kids run wild.

The survey results also revealed just how much parents (and, anyone who spends time with kids) need this:

  • 98% wanted an app to find free activities.
  • 93% wanted help finding casual care providers.
  • 91% wanted to discover casual kids’ classes.

In this cost-of-living climate, free kids activities and outings feel like finding buried treasure. Maggie’s here to help you score those wins without spending hours hunting them down. First Nations Voices Lead the Conversation in New Mental Fitness Podcast

Launching today, the Mental Fitness Conversations podcast is a bold and necessary new space for truth-telling, healing, and connection, led entirely by First Nations voices.

A collaboration between Gotcha4Life and the award-winning Black Magic Woman podcast, this 10-part series puts the lived experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples at the heart of the mental health conversation. Hosted by the extraordinary Mundanara Bayles – a proud Wonnarua, Bundjalung, Gangulu and Birri-Gubba woman, educator, and Gotcha4Life Board Member – each episode offers a raw and unfiltered insight into some of the most inspiring voices in the country.

These include people like three-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion and author Shantelle Thompson OAM, queer Indigenous advocate and presenter Matty Mills, youth advocate and actor Quaden Bayles, psychologist Dr Clinton Schultz, and comedian-author Steph Tisdell. They open up about what mental fitness means to them, the challenges they’ve faced, and the cultural practices and community connections that keep them strong.

The timing of this series couldn’t be more urgent. Suicide remains the leading cause of death for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples aged 15 to 44, with Indigenous men 2.6 times more likely to die by suicide than non-Indigenous males. For far too long, mainstream mental health approaches have failed to meet the needs of First Nations communities, with many services inaccessible or culturally unsafe. Mental Fitness Conversations directly addresses this gap – centring the conversation on culture, identity, and community, not just clinical care.

Bayles describes the podcast as both a reclamation and a celebration. “This series is about truth-telling, healing, and celebrating the strength of our communities,” she says. “We’re creating space for First Nations people to lead the conversation on mental fitness – in our voices, on our terms.”

It’s an approach that is as uplifting as it is grounded. Rather than treating mental health as something to “fix” when it’s broken, the podcast reframes it as a muscle – something that can be strengthened every day with the right tools and support. As Gotcha4Life CEO Belinda Elworthy puts it, “Mental fitness is like physical fitness – it’s something we can all build with small, everyday actions. This podcast is about giving people the tools to do that, in a way that’s culturally safe and community led.”

Across the series, the yarns are honest, emotional, and often deeply personal – but they’re also full of humour, pride, and resilience. In fact, searches for “Clueless” have jumped by nearly a third (32%) since the start of 2025. Clearly, the world is still totally buggin’ over this movie’s killer wardrobe. But, before you think it’s all yellow tartan suits and “whatever” hand gestures, there’s more to this ‘90s comeback than meets the eye.

Babydoll dresses are so necessary.

Searches for “90s babydoll dress” have skyrocketed by over 65% – which makes sense because these floaty little numbers are basically the fashion equivalent of a flirty hair flip. Whether you’re pairing them with chunky Mary Janes or going grunge with combat boots, the babydoll is back and it’s making everyone look like they just stepped out of a Beverly Hills house party.

Collectables? I totally paused.

For the movie buffs, “Clueless Funko Pop” searches have more than doubled (125%). Because if you can’t have a rotating closet IRL, at least you can have a mini Cher and Dionne sitting on your desk judging your outfit choices.

How Tech is Transforming Traditional Art Forms

For centuries, dance has relied on the language of movement, music, and costume to transport audiences into other worlds. But in 2025, that world is shifting. And in Adelaide, the state’s only professional ballet company is showing exactly how technology can enhance, rather than overshadow, tradition.

This August, Adelaide Ballet makes its inaugural season debut at ILA with Murray Whispers (15–17 August), a work as much about innovation as it is about heritage. Choreographed by Co-Founders and Artistic Directors Sarah Humeniuk and Rejane Garcia, the production draws inspiration from the majestic Murray River – a waterway both deeply personal and freshly observed. “Murray Whispers is a deeply personal piece for us – a meeting of two lived experiences: one rooted and the other discovering,” they explain. “For audiences, it will be a performance that taps into every sense, with the river’s changing flow, pulse and beauty exquisitely expressed through a fusion of dance, music and visual imagery.”

And, fusion is the keyword. Alongside the classically trained dancers and original score by pianist-composer Ashley Hribar, Murray Whispers integrates vast LED screen projections created by Adelaide visual artists Thomas Oates and Scott Baskett. The result is an immersive visual environment where light and movement echo the river’s moods. “Working with Thomas and Scott has been transformative,” Sarah and Rejane say. “They immediately understood our invitation to collaborate… as an invitation to blur boundaries between mediums. Their interpretation of the river’s essence through light, movement, and landscape opened endless possibilities while adding intricate new layers of storytelling that we couldn’t have achieved with dance alone.”

For the choreographers, technology isn’t an enemy of ballet’s purity – it’s a powerful ally. “Ballet has always evolved. What we consider ‘traditional’ today was once radical. For us, the line isn’t about resisting innovation but about ensuring it serves the story, the emotion, and the human connection at the heart of ballet. If technology deepens the experience without overshadowing the dancers or the music, it becomes a beautiful extension of the art.”

That balance between tradition and innovation is reflected in every detail of the production. Costumes by SA’s own Kira Bayliss, crafted with the expertise of Alice Ong, root the performance in place and memory, while the LED landscapes and musical score lift it into a dreamlike realm. “Composer Ashley Hribar’s score feels like it rises out of the riverbanks themselves,” Sarah and Rejane note, adding that working with a local creative team has been “incredibly special” for a company so committed to empowering South Australian voices.

The sensory ambition of Murray Whispers goes far beyond sight and sound. “Sight… how magnificent. Sound… oh, get whisked away. Touch… well, all the embracing, the connection of a finger to a cheek… and you the audience, touch with such powerful emotion, the very spirit is touched. Smell… gum, green, summer blossom. Taste… dinner afterwards at the wonderful ILA restaurant at ILA. Indulge all the senses… an escape… all senses, through art.”

It’s also a milestone for Adelaide Ballet itself. Founded in 2022, the company emerged from what Sarah and Rejane describe as “both love and necessity.” For too long, South Australia had no professional ballet company to call its own. “Ballet is not just an art form, it’s a cultural heartbeat,” they say. “Why now? Because the time is right to reignite ballet here with fresh purpose … A partnership like this is so unique at this time, as we do not have a long consistent heritage of producing dancers of such calibre who have had a good professional career.”

Their ambitions reach far beyond a single season. “We are establishing Adelaide Ballet as the premier Ballet Company of South Australia… a company that belongs to the people. Performing and working full-time for mainstage seasons, regional tours, international collaborations, and a home that nurtures both creation and community. Culturally, we become a beacon… This isn’t just about dance; it’s about legacy, leadership and shaping the future of arts in our state.”

In Murray Whispers, classical ballet’s grace meets cutting-edge visual technology – not to dilute tradition, but to deepen it. And in doing so, Adelaide Ballet is making the case that the future of the art form lies not in resisting change, but in embracing it. One mesmerising performance at a time.

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a message from an unknown number, wondering if it’s legit or a scam in disguise, you’re not alone. Scammers have been getting sneakier, sliding into private messages with “exclusive offers,” “quick cash” schemes, or the classic “urgent request from a long-lost cousin you’ve never met.” But, now, WhatsApp is rolling out some new tools in Australia designed to give you the upper hand. And keep your chats scam-free.

First up, Smarter Group Safety. We’ve all been there. One minute you’re minding your own business, the next you’ve been added to a group full of strangers talking about cryptocurrency or discount luxury bags. Now, if someone not in your contacts adds you to a group you don’t recognise, WhatsApp will show you a safety overview before you even peek inside. You’ll get key info, tips to stay safe, and the option to exit without reading a single dodgy message. If it does ring a bell after seeing the details, you can open the chat for more context. But until you confirm you want to stay, notifications from that group will be blissfully silent.

Next is Warnings for Unknown Contacts – a handy feature that gives you extra context when starting a chat with a number that’s not in your contacts. It’s basically WhatsApp’s way of saying, “Hey, are you sure about this?” before you hit send. Scammers often try to lure people in via other platforms and then move the conversation to a private messenger like WhatsApp. This pause-and-think moment is designed to help you spot something shady before you’re in too deep. And while new tools are great, there’s also the big behind-the-scenes work happening. It’s an object you hear with your ears, and also one you feel with your eyes. A marriage of sound and light, technology and artistry.

Bang & Olufsen’s BEOSOUND A9 is already something of a design icon. Known for its sculptural silhouette, rich audio, and the ability to blend seamlessly into interiors, it has long appealed to those who value both performance and aesthetics. However, with Haydenshapes x Bang & Olufsen Catalyst the Danish audio house and the Australian designer have taken the concept into entirely new territory. One that plays with the kinetic movement of sound waves and the transformative qualities of light.

At the core of this edition lies resin. Not the kind you’d casually encounter in your 1990s jewellery pieces, but a meticulously crafted material that behaves like the ocean interacting with sunlight. As a result, it refracts and absorbs light, changing hues as the day moves from dawn to dusk. This isn’t simply a decorative flourish; it’s a material in conversation with its surroundings, much like sound adapting to the acoustics of a room. As Hayden Cox explains, “Material has always played the most critical role in the things I create”. The name Catalyst carries a dual meaning. In chemistry, a catalyst is the agent that triggers change – in resin casting, it’s what causes the material to heat, harden, and take shape. But, in this project, it also symbolises the spark that brought Bang & Olufsen and Haydenshapes together: a shared vision for how shape, material, and performance could converge into something truly special.

Physically, the Haydenshapes x Bang & Olufsen Catalyst stands apart through its interchangeable printed speaker cover and custom-developed legs made from translucent resin. Each leg is cast and shaped by hand using Cox’s own resin formulation – the result of decades of experience in surfboard manufacturing and innovations like his patented FutureFlex carbon fibre rail technology. As the legs taper, the textures formed during the catalysis process create a mesmerising iridescent gradient. This shifting blue fade directly inspired the speaker’s cover art, creating a visual harmony between the two elements.

This interplay between material and light is no accident. The vibrant blue resin emerged from an intensive process of pigment layering, catalyst adjustment, and transparency refinement. It’s a hands-on, almost meditative method of experimentation – the same trial-and-error process that has defined Haydenshapes’ approach to surfboards, art installations, and luxury furniture collaborations. In recent years, Cox’s work with resin has moved beyond the surf industry, leading to commissions with figures such as artist Daniel Arsham and projects for Space Furniture and the Art Gallery of NSW’s SANAA-led Sydney Modern development.

In the Haydenshapes x Bang & Olufsen Catalyst these years of research and craftsmanship have found a new canvas. The result is an object that doesn’t just stand in a room – it interacts with it.
